Ottawa, ON – After nine years of this NDP-Liberal Government, Canadians are experiencing one of the worst slides in living standards in our country’s history. In 2014, the year before Trudeau was elected, the New York Times wrote that Canada was home to “the world’s most affluent middle class.” Now, the per-person economic output in most of our provinces lags behind states like Alabama and Mississippi.
The dire state of Canada’s economy was confirmed again yesterday by the Fraser Institute, who reported that Canadians’ incomes have drastically fallen behind the incomes of Americans. In this, the Fraser Institute’s research shows that “Canadian provinces are getting poorer relative to their US peers.”
When measuring the earnings of all 50 US states and 10 Canadian provinces between 2010 and 2022, only one province – British Columbia – was in the top half of growth in earnings. Seven Canadian provinces ranked near the bottom of all jurisdictions for earning growth, with Ontario placing at 56th, Nova Scotia at 57th, and Manitoba and Saskatchewan at 58th and 59th, respectively.
Nearly all of this damage occurred under Justin Trudeau’s tenure. By 2022, all ten Canadian provinces ranked in the bottom ten positions for earnings per person. This follows a report from RBC which predicted that Canada’s GDP per capita will decrease for a sixth consecutive quarter. In fact, the per-person income of Canadians has now fallen back to the same level it was in 2015, while unemployment has risen to 6.6 percent in August.
This is the worst unemployment rate Canada has recorded since May 2017, excluding the pandemic, with 44,000 Canadians losing their full-time work. Meanwhile, the United States saw their unemployment rate drop to 4.2 percent.
