Ottawa, ON – After nine years of Justin Trudeau, housing has never been more expensive. Since Trudeau became Prime Minister, the cost of rent, downpayments and mortgages have all doubled and our once-cheap cities have become unaffordable.

Housing has become unaffordable because this Liberal Government has failed to build enough homes for Canadians. Under Trudeau, Canada is building fewer homes than we did in the 1970s when our population was half the size.

Today, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has reported that this issue is only getting worse. In spite of Canada’s growing population, the CMHC confirmed that housing starts decreased by 9 percent in June. On top of this, when compared to June of 2023, housing starts last month had decreased by 13 percent.

This problem is even more severe in Canada’s already unaffordable cities. In Vancouver, the number of housing starts has declined by 13 percent, while Toronto saw a significant decrease of 37 percent. This means that more Canadians are competing for fewer homes, pushing up the cost of housing for everyone.

Instead of building the homes that Canadians need, the Liberal Government has only built more bureaucracy. Trudeau continues to reward the same municipal gatekeepers who are blocking housing construction with billions of dollars in exchange for pointless photo-ops. No wonder the average asking rent for residential properties has never been more expensive, reaching $2,185 this June.

Justin Trudeau just isn’t worth the cost. Only Common Sense Conservatives will fire the gatekeepers and tie federal infrastructure funding to housing starts to bring affordable homes for Canadians.
